Brotherhood of St.
Andrew Expands its Ministry
One of the basic principles of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew is
to perform
continuous service aimed at the spread of Christ’s kingdom. The chapter at
Christ
Church has been looking for ways to expand this area of ministry for some
time. This August we found an opportunity that fit our limited manpower
resources, when we supported the Sussex Episcopal Work Camp.
Sussex Episcopal Work Camp grew out of a ministry by St. Martha’s parish
designed to provide emergency repairs to homeowners who are unable to afford
them. This effort was the brainchild and ministry of Deacon Tom McCormick,
who has partnered with the Resource Conservation and Development Council of
Delaware (an independent Not-for-Profit corporation) to form the camp
program.
The camp, headquartered at Camp Arrowhead and supported by the Diocese of
Delaware, was originally conceived as a residential program. The idea was
that people would come to camp for a five-day stay – pray together, work
together, and have a little fun along the way. Most do. However, when Deacon
Tom presented this idea to our Brotherhood chapter last winter the universal
reaction was, “Can’t schedule a whole week, but maybe a day…” So a plot was
hatched.
The Brothers Andrew reasoned that it could be of some use to the work camp
program if an extra pair of hands was provided to one of the work crews and
we could all fit our on scheduling needs if no one was obligated for much
more than a “workday.” Four Brothers – Chick Donovan, Jim Hickin, Mark
Mundy, and Casper Posley – joined forces to provide one not so mythical
manweek. The crew to which we were assigned handled three jobs that week. We
covered all of the on the job time and even found some time for a little
fellowship with some like minded volunteers. Deacon Tom and his staff seemed
to think that the “four = one” plan was a worthwhile effort.
As for the Brothers Andrew. They must have all become Orioles fans. They
said
“Wait till next year and see what we can do.”
Acolyte
Ministry
Welcome Mitch Edmondson is our
new Acolyte Coordinator! Mitch is teaming this important ministry
as he teaches and nurtures our youth in the service of our Lord. You may see
him from
time to time at the altar, especially as the Acolytes light the candles for
Sunday worship. Mitch's first duties began with our first annual
Acolyte workshop, led by Father Jim and assisted by Deacon
Dottie. Father Jim explained what is expected of an acolyte and answered
questions. Together, all practiced lighting candles, processing, recessing,
and each acolyte found their own vestment. Even though a large part
of the training is "on the job," our acolytes will be meeting several times
a year for further instruction and support.
Thank you for all that you will be doing.

Lay Eucharistic Visitor
If you are hospitalized, and do not let anyone know,
do not expect a visit. In order for either the priest, or a Lay Eucharistic
Visitor to visit you in the hospital, we have to know you are in the
hospital!” We are good, but our notification of people in the hospital by
the Holy Spirit is very limited at this time. It may get better in the
future, but as of now, neither I, nor any Lay Eucharistic Visitor has been
notified by the Holy Spirit of any one being in the hospital.”
